Oil prices have alot to do with real estate. It's definitely a major factor of why there is a housing slump in further suburbs away from the Bay Area as people are choosing to leave their homes to move closer to work rather than commute.
Even with newer, and more spacious models of homes in these exurbs, people don't want to afford filling the tank up 2-4 times a week. While the time spent commuting was something that people personally had chosen for in making that initial decision, the cost of gas wasn't such a factor back then.
So right now, there is a definite trend toward living closer to work.
The next step in reacting to high gas prices? - Scooters.
Scooters, are relatively affordable, and can go for a long time on very little gas. Of course, scooters are only good for local driving, but great during good weather for trips to the supermarket, local eatery, and a quick visit to friends.
I wonder if I can show homes on them? I probably need a GPS with it though.
check out http://www.vespausa.com/, http://powersports.honda.com/scooters/, go to eBay and see what's out there.
